About Clovia

Academics Cooperation Sisterhood Application

The Kansas 4-H Foundation serves as the landlord for the Clovia Scholarship House near the campus of Kansas State University. The house is open to 4-H alumnae with first preference to former Kansas 4-H members. Members are selected through an application and interview process. We invite you to take a closer look at life at Alpha of Clovia.

Clovia History

Alpha of Clovia, an independent scholarship house, was established during the Great Depression in 1931 by seven 4-H students, forming the first cooperative house at Kansas State University.

Today Alpha of Clovia continues the intent of the founders - to provide sisterhood and further develop leadership skills among former 4-H members and those of similar background. Ninety percent of Clovers are required to have been 4-H members.

Clovia is located just one block off the Kansas State University campus. This house, the third in Clovia's history, was built through donations by the Kansas 4-H Foundation and other friends of Clovia.

Academics

While there are many opportunities for Clovia women to broaden their social experience, scholastic achievement is a priority among members. A minimum GPA OF 2.5 is required for initiation, and full members must maintain a 2.5 GPA.

Clovia also offers other opportunities to enhance the academic environment. There is a large study room with 24-hour quiet, study hours for relaxed study. There are also two house computers available for everyone and a scholarship file of class notes and study questions.

Cooperative Living

House duties are distributed among members in this cooperative living situation, with an average of four to five hours of duties per week for each member.

Duties are assigned based on each woman's preferences and are arranged around class schedules. Each person has the opportunity to request certain duties, from cooking and cleaning to yard work.

Other duties are assigned on a rotating basis, including responsibilities like phone and door duty, wake-up duty, and serving the Wednesday night dress dinner.

This cooperative effort allows Clovia to be an economical living situation. Members pay around $1,600 each semester, which includes 20 meals each week.

Sisterhood

Life at Clovia offers women the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of social events, including a fall barn dance, a spring formal and homecoming activities. They also take part in intramural sports and various community service projects.

New Clovers go through a semester-long period of new member training. They learn about house policies and Clovia history. New members also choose a big sister to guide them through initiation.

All women participate in determining house rules and policies as well as electing house officers. Decisions are made by house members at meetings each Wednesday night.

Guidance is found in Clovia's housemother, who has her own small set of rooms in the house. Also available to the women are two faculty and three alumnae advisors who participate in house activities.
