About our Housemother:
A native of Wilson, Kansas, Alma (Mattas) Deutsch earned her bachelor’s degree in business administration from Kansas State University and has been employed with the university for the past 23 years. Alma has two children and six grandchildren. She is a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Wilson and Town and County Garden Club in Manhattan. She is a former 4-H member and enjoys cooking, gardening and reading. She also enjoys garage sales, flea markets and university events.
The purpose of a housemother:
Clovia’s housemother is available to help any member with problems or questions that she may desire to share with her. She functions as a role model and example as well as a source of information and help.
Courtesies the housemother can expect:
All members should rise when the housemother enters the room and when it is time to escort her to dinner.
Each week, two girls will be assigned as housemother escorts. These members should set up activities during the week to attend with the housemother such as ice cream, dinner, or a campus activity the housemother would like to attend.
The housemother’s dinner escorts are assigned by rooms each week. At least one member of the room will escort the housemother to the evening meals.\
The housemother should be informed of all activities that will be taking place in the house or involving the members. She should also be informed of any special guest that will attend meals or visiting the house.
Job Summary:
Cooperate with all officers and members, alumnae and special chapter advisors in planning and directing all house activities.
Maintain and understand the ideals of cooperative living.
Provide input, with the assistance of the business managers regarding the budget, nutritious and attractive menus, and ordering supplies. In particular, she would meet weekly with the business managers.
Sit in on interviews of prospective members during hospitality weekend and all other times.
Act as an official hostess at all times. This includes attending meals and all organized social functions and house activities and greeting guests. Take part in activities with other housemothers as Clovia’s representative.
Cooperate and counsel with members as necessary. Keep all problems within, do not discuss individual or organizational problems outside of the house.
Must attend all executive council meeting and inform council of obligations that take her away from the house overnight or over a weekend.
Reports to house president who represents all members and alumnae.
The housemother will be provided room and board, health and liability insurance.
Minimum Experience Requirements:
Experience in counseling and business management.
The housemother shall cooperate with the alum board and meet regularly with the alum advisors. She shall also attend meetings of the alum board.
The housemother is provided room and board. The housemother is responsible for her personal property. The alum board maintains liability insurance for such property and is responsible for damages (i.e. if stolen or damaged by natural disaster). However, if the housemother damages property or furnishings herself, she is to be held accountable for such damages and pay for ramifications.
She shall be furnished the daily Collegian, student directory, and other university publications she may desire.
The housemother is not responsible for enforcing any rules or policies of the house. She may, if necessary, point out severe negligence to the president or another officer, but she should be discreet with her discussions. The housemother should also remain impartial during any internal conflicts. She should never take authority that the members can assume.
In the event that a member of the house does not return within a reasonable time of her expected return the housemother should be informed. She shall take the responsibility of calling whoever is necessary. For this reason, the housemother should be given each member’s home address and a person to call in case of an emergency at the beginning of each semester. If this information changes, the members should take the responsibility to inform the housemother of the new information.
