The
K-State Marching Band toured London to play, May 1980. Karen Kalivoda was
a member of that band. That year Clovia gave a triple wedding shower, gifts
and all. It also entered the Milk Maid, Milk Man Contest, sponsored by the
Dairy Department. Houses paired up and showed their expertise at such things
as milking, can rolling, etc. The first Lil' Brother, Lil' Sister Weekend
was held in '80.
A
new New Member Policy was accepted that year. Instead of having two pledgings
per year, there became only one new member class for the year. No dorm new
members were allowed so the girls could participate fully in Clovia life.
Mount
St. Helens volcano blew in '80, and Kansas had its first presidential Preference
Primary. Interest rates went over 20% and gas was selling for well over
$1.00 per gallon. Ronald Reagan was elected President Iran had held fifty
two Americans hostage for 444 days. During Reagan's inauguration, Jan 20,
1981, the hostages were finally released.
Life
at Clovia in its 50th year was as busy and active as ever, with such activities
as Frosty Frolic when Santa came, Crimson and Clover as a barndance, and
Santa Lucia at Christmas time. There was a retreat at Pott. County Lake
#2 before school, and Clovia experimented with a Chinese meal at the house.
Intramurals, University Sing, sneaks, senior breakfasts, vespers, chocolate
and lemon bell ringings, and much studying still take up the lives of Clovia
coeds.
As
1981 gets under way Clovia alumnae and members are looking forward to celebrating
fifty years of sisterhood. Another fifty years of successes are being looked
forward to by all.
